American Gold Star Manor

Overview

American Gold Star Manor traces to a plan unveiled at the 10th National Convention of American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. (a national organization of women who lost children in US military service) to build a memorial home for dependent/pensioned members. In 1953 the organization purchased the 93-acre Truman Boyd Manor property in Long Beach, California (former WWII defense-worker housing); a 1975 HUD-financed rebuild created the 348-unit senior-living complex that exists today as a living memorial for Gold Star parents, veterans, and eligible seniors.
