Barilla G. e R. Fratelli S.p.A., founded 1877 by Pietro Barilla as a bakery and pasta shop in Parma, Italy, is the world's largest pasta producer (35% share of the Italian market, 13% of the US market). Sold to US conglomerate W.R. Grace & Co. in 1971, repurchased by the family in 1979, and remains privately held -- roughly 85% owned by fourth-generation brothers Paolo, Luca, and Guido Barilla.
