Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, established 1944 by Michael and Sarah Benedum (oil-and-gas fortune) in memory of their son Claude, who died in 1918, is a regional Pittsburgh-based philanthropy. Invests roughly two-thirds of its grantmaking in West Virginia and one-third in Southwestern Pennsylvania under the guiding directive to 'help people help themselves.' Has distributed over $1.4bn (in today's dollars) since inception.
