Gruppo illy (parent Holding Illy S.p.A.) traces to Illycaffè, founded 1933 by Francesco Illy in Trieste, remaining under founding-family control through four generations. Diversified into a holding structure starting 2003, acquiring premium tea, chocolate, candied-fruit, and wine producers. In 2021, Rhône Capital acquired a 20% stake in Illycaffè via Ambrosia Holdings SARL as a strategic partner to support international (especially US) growth, coinciding with the fourth generation's appointment to the board -- while the family has consistently rebuffed acquisition overtures to preserve control.
